What the Experts say:

Clean your blinds every time you do a major house cleaning
Dust your window coverings monthly
Try to clean them once a season and really well at least twice a year

Ideally, you're performing a major home cleaning at least once every season. Routine cleaning happens all the time but if you can include your blinds or shutters into your master list, you'll ensure they get a good deep cleaning four times a year. Considering many people don't clean their blinds unless they call someone, that's major progress. And it won't seem like such a chore when wrapped in with a bigger project and you won't have an excuse for putting it off.

Window coverings collect dust fairly quickly so be sure to go over them once a month to ensure they stay free of particulates. Performing two sessions of special care for your window coverings will ensure they get the proper attention they need to stay in beautiful shape.

You may want to tack on a few extra sessions if you have pets or children in the home. That means more dust and dander and more sticky fingers and paws on everything. You might be surprised at how a hidden smudge of jam got on the bottom of your plantation blinds in the upstairs bathroom -- so give them a once-over every so often and a quick cleaning to stay on top of it.

How to Dust Blinds and Shutters by Hand (Vinyl, Painted and Faux Wood):

•
Extend the blinds and close blinds/shutters so that they are flat as possible
•
Use a dust cloth or feather duster and begin at the top of the blinds or shades
•
Go across each slat sideways and then go on to the next until you're at the bottom.

Once you've done that, you can put a sock over your hand and just run it over the slats. This will pick up anything that was left behind and allow you to maneuver your hands to go over the entire slat, over and under and back and forth.

Use a Vacuum to make Dusting faster:

A vacuum will have attachments that can make your work easier
Use the brush attachment and go from the top down, rotating slats and going over them again to ensure you've got everything
Wipe slats with a dryer sheet to get rid of any remaining dust
Treat your duster with an anti-static, non-silicone spray to make the surface dust-resistant

Washing Dirty Aluminum or Vinyl Blinds in the tub:

Cover your blinds in the tub with water - adding in 3 cups of vinegar and some blue dishwashing soap
Mix lightly and then let them soak for ten minutes on each side, wiping down with a sponge each time
You can use q-tips or a toothbrush to deep clean fine areas, rinsing the blinds with clean water and hanging to dry in an outdoor place or on the floor of the tub
You can then wipe them clean with a cloth and hang them back up

Dust your Wood Blinds and Shutters regularly:

Regular dusting will help get rid of the build-up that accumulates so quickly. Reduce the dust hanging around your house and achieve purer air by cleaning regularly with a duster or a vacuum.

Real Wood Blinds or Shutters:

Never allow real wood shutters and blinds to get wet. You may cause damage you can't reverse
Use lemon oil or a special furniture polish to protect the wood and get it looking beautiful again
Use an old rag or t-shirt you don't want with some polish or oil
When in doubt, use a Swiffer. Those microfiber cloths pick up more dust due to their attraction and are always easy to use

Vertical Blinds:

Dust or vacuum both sides until you are at the bottom.
Clean up areas that are soiled using soapy water or an all-purpose cleaner with a cloth and then rinse with a moist cloth
Wash vinyl or aluminum blinds by placing a tarp under them and washing the length with a sponge and soapy water until clean on both sides
Wash fabric vertical blinds in a gentle cycle in your washer with Woolite and then line dry, steaming on low and replacing on vanes

Exterior Shutters (Aluminum, Composite, Vinyl):

Aluminum shutters are easy to clean when you've got a hose, brush, and mops. You may need a ladder and a helper.

Brush dirt off shutters by hosing them down
Add soapy water and use a mop to rinse
Wipe clean with a microfiber mop and brush away extra dirt with a power washer
